It was a good day.
Turning 42 was not my favorite thing to do but with the fitness challenge - why not? I took the day off from work to get all of this done in one day.
I got up at 5:20 and was at the pool and in the water by 5:45am. I swam 2000 yards in 56:24 before heading home and taking the kids to school. I have a 2 mile running loop around the house so that was the easy part. 2 miles - 17:50 (a sub 9 min/mile pace with no warm up). Then back to the pool. My back and shoulders were letting me know how far I had to go so I decided to work in 250 yard blocks. Do 250 Kick 50 and go again. 1000 yard time 27:15. I got out of the pool, stretched, had a gel pack and some electrolyte drink and did the last 1000 in 30:15. Total time for 4000 yards - 1:53:54. I was pleased in that this is the longest distance I have ever done. At peak swim workouts last season I was only doing about 2000 yards.
Back home to the bike - I had planned to head out but we were having rain showers and 20-30 mile per hour winds so out comes the trainer. I have been working with the trainer with the resisitance setting in the middle to high range to work on my endurance but for today I turned it back to low. With everything set up - I popped in Casino Royale and started peddaling. I broke the 42 miles into a 25 mile ride and a 17 mile ride after lunch. I got aero bars for Christmas so I really worked on staying in position and keeping my cadence between 85 and 90. Total time on the bike - 1:42:52 (average pace of 24.5 mph - I do not think I could keep this pace on the open road but for today - I will take it!)
Total time for the event - not counting the breaks and lunch: 3:55:36
My wife and friends think I am crazy but if you have to have a midlife crisis - this is a good one to have. Hope you all have a great 2009 season.
