Swim, Bike, and Run your Age!
If Not Now, When?

My birthday was April 20th and I had reason to celebrate as I had completed the Gold Challenge prior to my 51st birthday. This challenge was a great motivator to me and really helped me focus on my workouts prior to taking the challenge.

I started the challenge on April 17th at 1:30 P.M. At this time I jumped onto the spin cycle at the healthclub due to 30+ mph winds and very cool temps. For the next 1 hour and 45 minutes i listened to the ipod while pedaling away and completing 30 miles. At 3:15 I jumped off the bike chaged clothes and headed off to the high school pool for part of the swim.

At 4 P.M. I hit the pool and completed a 4,500 meter swim. Running out of time I hit the showers, got dressed and headed off to a United Way meeting to network (my wife says I can not give up my day job). That night I thought about the challenge and had some doubts about finishing it. I woke up early (4 A.M.) made coffee and headed off to the track to complete the run. Windy, cool, and dark were the conditions of the track but thank goodness for the two security lights at the track so that i could see as I finished the 1 mile run in 10 minutes 23 seconds. Not fast but given the time of day, the weather conditions, and my state of mind I was happy to finish it. I waited in the parking lot until 5:15 A.M. for the swim coach to arrive so that i could finish the swim. I hit the water at 5:43 and completed the 3,000 meters in 58 minutes, 46 seconds. This swim was pretty much just a straight swim to finish it.

After the swim it was breakfast and off to work to answer emails and voicemails. Watching the clock closely to insure that I could finish in less than 24 hours I left work at 11 A.M. and headed home. I changed into my biking clothes and headed out the door even though the winds had picked up to 15-20 mph i did not want to ride the spin cycle for this. I headed south out of Casper heaeded towrds Glenrock which was fast due to the tailwind that I had. However at the turnaround it was hard work all the way home (wind and uphill plus out of shape) but I arrived home at 1:06 P.M. completing the challenge i under 24 hours. My wife was home for lunch and she thought I was crazy for trying this but she supports me anyway.

This challenge was great and I have actually started thinking about next year and how to improve my time. By the way the Hornet Juice and chocolate covered espresso beans made for great snacks and fluid replacement.

Hi Dennis,

Great work and a great Challenge.

I keep hearing from some that the swim is too long for Gold.

You just proved them wrong.

Thanks and Congrats!
