August 2nd started cloudy, cool and threatening to rain. I woke at 6 and was on the bike by 6:30. A beautiful ride ended 40 miles and two hours later. I was back at home before the rain started falling and feeling really strong. A 20mph average was a bit faster than I was planning but I hate to drag things out. I just kept thinking, "The faster I ride, the sooner I will be done."
I quickly changed and started the one and a half hour drive to the coastal town of Salem, MA for the Purely Mad 2 Mile Ocean Swim. I arrived to find the weather holding and my muscles stiff and tired. After an hour of stretching and warming back up I toed the sand and braved the 200(approx.) person washing machine start. The rush of racing soon found me swimming faster than planned...surprise. My one mile split ws 24:30. When I saw that I thought about the three more miles I had to swim today and the 10 miles of running later. I smartly slowed to what I thought was a more reasonable pace only to find upon finishing that I had barely slowed down at all. I ran up the beach and crossed the line in 50:53. A pr but then again any time would have been a pr since that was my longest swim ever. And I still had two miles to go.
After getting my free massage...worth the price of admission alone...I got in the car and drove the 1.5 hours back home where I planned to finish my swim in the lake behind my house. Unfortunately, the weather had caught up and it was raining in earnest and the thought of lightning was not appealing. So the local YMCA would have to do. I finished the next two miles of swimming in one hour flat and felt really Really REALLY tired. But no rest for the wicked.
I finished my drive home at a light snack and changed into my running gear. A wetsuit would have been just as handy since I was soaked to the bone before turning off my street. 10 miles of trail running in the mud, rain and thunder was actually quite enjoyable. Much better than 90 and sunny! Averaging 10 min. miles wasn't exactly tearing it up but at this point I was enjoying myself and didn't want it to end. Or get injured. Although tired and wet I was not in a coma and even had energy to shower and go out to a late dinner with my family.
I can't imagine a better way to celebrate my 40th birthday. My family thinks I am nuts but the sense of accomplishment and knowing that I can push myself to new limits was exactly what I needed to keep me from going off the deep end thinking about being 40 freaking years old.
Can't wait till I turn 50!!!!
