Okay, I have a vital question for all the ultra-marathon geeks out there.

I'm looking at my first 50-miler in October. I have two options. One is a fairly rolling road race (all asphalt roads). The other is an out and back trail race, with just over 10,000 feet of elevation gain over the course (with the associated descents, as the start and finish are the same place).

Here are a few other bits of information that might help. The road race has an 11 hour cutoff. The trail race has a 12 hour limit. My running history is all road races with VERY little trail running experience.

Tom, you are crazy ;-)

That's all I can say. A buddy of mine just did a 50 mile race and felt bad because most of the racers were doing the 100 mile run.

That's a dangerous road you are heading down and it only leads to places like running through death valley or up and over several very large mountains in Leadville, CO.

Good Luck and have fun!

So, you think the idea of doing a marathon barefoot, next year, just to see if I can do it is ill-advised? Or just indicative of a need for psychiatric help?

Don't do it Iron Pol.

If you want a new Challenge why not do four races in four consecutive weekends next summer.

They can all be small, local and cheap, but that would certainly be something new and different to try.

I am partial to the "Get you Ass over the Pass" race

If Gold is running your age in one day (assuming a 24 hour period), do we get Platinum or something for doing it in one single run?

After a 20 mile run followed by a 15 mile run, I'm getting a better feel for just how "painful" it will be to complete a 40 mile run.

Should it be enacted, I think this requires hard data, like the output from an HRM or GPS to prove it. While certainly not infallible it'd be fun to compare peoples 40+ mile runs for Plat.
